Training in psychoanalysis is available at five CPS institutes across Canada. Training includes three components: a personal analysis with a training analyst (four times a week, preferably starting before admission); a four-year didactic curriculum; and weekly supervision with a Training Analyst* for each of three training cases. An undergraduate degree is the minimum education requirement for application, a postgraduate degree is preferred. Selected applicants undergo three interviews with members of the Society.
Certification in Psychoanalysis marks the culmination of our tripartite model of psychoanalytic training. After successfully meeting all requirements, candidates receive a Certificate of Training in Psychoanalysis, qualifying them to practice psychoanalysis, making them eligible for membership in our society and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). CPS training institutes are the only ones in Canada affiliated with IPA. These local, national, and international organizations offer opportunities to participate in workshops and conferences that showcase the latest developments in clinical psychoanalysis.
The decision to pursue training in psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy is highly individual. Our CPS institutes are here to assist you in determining which institute and program may suit your current professional development stage. They can also answer questions and help facilitate your application. To learn more about psychoanalytic training in Canada, please contact each institute directly.
*‘Training analyst’ is a designation in the CPS which is conferred on analysts who analyze and supervise candidates in training.
