Welcome to the Home of Psychoanalysis in Canada
The Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS), has been providing psychoanalysis in Canada since 1957. As a vibrant and forward-thinking institute, CPS is committed to delivering comprehensive psychoanalytic training to mental health professionals at all levels. Today, psychoanalysis offered by CPS members in Canada is an intensive form of psychotherapy that facilitates personal development and liberation from unsatisfying or painful patterns of living. In pursuit of enhancing mental health, the individual and analyst work in close collaboration. They meticulously examine personal and interpersonal experiences, the interplay of past and present, the connection between body and mind, and the dynamic between fantasy and reality. Through this in-depth exploration over time, a transformative process can unfold, leading to a renewed sense of lived experience, enhanced creativity, and rediscovered meaningfulness in relationships and activities.
The psychoanalytic process depends on the establishment of a safe, confidential relationship with one’s analyst. The frequency of sessions – typically 3-4 times a week – provides a fertile ground for the analysand’s dilemmas and traumas to surface within the complexities of the psychoanalytic relationship, offering a rich field of exploration. The analyst’s unwavering attentiveness, enables the deciphering of the analysand’s experience through emotional reactions, thoughts, memories, fantasies, dreams, images, and bodily sensations.
Today’s Psychoanalysis
Gone are the days of the ‘silent analyst’ caricatured in films. Today psychoanalysis may even be conducted virtually (if indicated). The decision to enter into psychoanalysis entails a mutual agreement between analyst and analysand encompassing the frequency of sessions and jointly determined fees. The Canadian Psychoanalytic Society (CPS), through its component societies remains the best form of training in this field. Our diverse membership represents various ethnicities and cultures, providing psychoanalytic treatment in multiple languages. The decision to undergo an analysis isn’t one to be taken lightly, and requires ensuring you work with someone who adheres to the highest professional standards and qualifications. Our training, recognized for its rigor by the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), serves as a testament to our commitment to excellence.
